In which I get completely off topic.

I hope you like the first installment of my series of short stories that have nothing to do with each other whatsoever. All the characters are iguanas, so do not be confused if I call the kids iguanas. Well, at least its better than calling them dogs or something like a gym teacher who went to army school but got kicked out because he shot too many people named Will when the general said "Fire at will!" Oops, got waayyyyyy too off topic, much like a certain person I know........ Build-a-bear workshop does not just have bears....... JUST ENJOY!
            An Iguana's Christmas Story
Adalynn’s life was not treating her the way that she wanted it to. People just didn’t get her. She was just another iguana who was creative, funny, and smart. But that was the word—smart. Everyone misinterpreted it, calling Adalynn a geek. If not for this small, unfortunate misjudgment, Adalynn would’ve had many more friends. Just to make it worse, Adalynn went to an extremely strict school, where there were more bullies than she could imagine.
But there was one that stood out from the crowd of kids that made fun of Adalynn, though. His name was Hassan.
One day, Hassan, as usual, had detention. He was to scrub at the drawings that he’d made on the school’s courtyard walls until they were completely invisible. No sooner had he started scrubbing at the drawings than the school bell rang, signaling the end of the school day.
As Adalynn came out of the building and into the courtyard, she saw Hassan scrubbing the walls. She decided to go over to him and try to make at least one friend. Her mother had often told her that the best way to make a friend was to gradually start learning more about them, or helping them in times of need.
And from what Adalynn could tell, Hassan was definitely in need.
Adalynn quietly walked up to Hassan, and said, simply, “Hi! It’s Hassan, right?” As soon as she said this, Hassan jumped, frightened. “What was that for?! You scared the wits out of me!”
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you,” began Adalynn, “and you didn’t answer my question. Your name is Hassan, right?”
    “Yeah, what’s yours?”
“Adalynn. It’s nice to meet you, Hassan.” So far, so good, thought Adalynn. She peered around the other iguana curiously. “What are you doing?” she asked.
“I should be asking you the same thing.”
“I just had a bad day today. Whenever I have a day like this, I come here and calm myself down. My mom never gets worried because she thinks I’m a slow walker.”
    “You walk home?”
    “Yup. So what’s your excuse?”
“I got in trouble for drawing on the walls…in pencil, luckily. And now I have to scrub it off.”
What Adalynn did next surprised her, and Hassan, for that matter. She knelt down and grabbed the old yellow scrub brush out of the blue bucket of soapy water. Then she walked slowly over to the wall that Hassan had just been scrubbing and finished the job herself, cleaning the whole wall, even the places that didn’t have stick figures drawn all over it. When she was done, she looked back at Hassan, who was staring at her in awe. He had nothing to say, but “Thanks, Adalynn.”
    “See you around?”
    “Yup. Bye.”
    “Bye.”
With those words, they were going their separate ways.
The next day, Adalynn decided that she was, in fact, making her first friend. Hassan would sometimes separate from his mob of friends to come and talk to Adalynn. Soon, they became amazing friends that were inseparable.

Many months passed and Christmas came around. The weather got so cold, it started snowing. Soon, all of the iguanas in the middle school were forced to wear the embarrassing sweaters that their mothers had given them the previous Christmas.
There were two things that Adalynn loved about wintertime. One was the fact that it brought about Christmas. Christmas made the world suddenly seem brighter to her. The second was winter break. Adalynn got two whole weeks to herself with a school free, teasing free, and pressure free environment.
On the last day, Friday, before winter break, Adalynn and Hassan were standing next to each other at the bus stop at the end of the day, talking about what their families were doing (or wanted to do) to celebrate Christmas.
“We were planning on going to someplace warmer, like Hawaii,” explained Hassan, “but the weather got too cold for travel.”
“My family really wanted to travel to someplace warmer, but we had the same problem as you.” said Adalynn.
“Yeah, I can’t believe how cold it…” Hassan trailed off. He looked over Adalynn’s shoulder and saw a group of kids shouting and pushing a familiar boy toward the flagpole. Hassan knew who the iguana was; he just didn’t know their name.
Hassan felt someone come up behind him. He glanced behind him to see who it was. It was Adalynn.
“Who is that?” inquired Adalynn. “Do you know him?”
“Yeah, his name is…oh, now I remember. That’s Mark McHale. I used to hang out with him remember?”
    “Oh. What happened?”
    “Stuff.”
The two iguanas stood there, watching the ordeal. Finally, after only a few moments, Adalynn asked if they should go over and try to help Mark, who was being pushed against his will. Hassan was hesitant at first, but figured that if he helped Mark, the two could be friends again.
Hassan led Adalynn to a random student watching what was happening while whispering to her friends. He walked up to her and asked her what was happening. She told him that Mark was being forced to lick the flagpole, which was, unfortunately, covered in dry ice.
This is my chance, thought Adalynn, I could make another friend! I don’t even care if he is another boy. Feeling confident, Adalynn stepped boldly up to Mark and pulled him out of the middle of the crowd through the side. Mark took a few seconds for his brain to process what had happened, but when he did, he grabbed Adalynn by her shoulders and said excitedly, “Thank you!”
Adalynn suddenly got a warm, fuzzy feeling in her feet that spread throughout her whole body. She knew what it was--joy.
    But her happiness didn’t last.
“Who’s that, McHale? Your girlfriend?” asked a deep, yet snotty voice. Mark let go of Adalynn and turned around, obviously annoyed with the owner of the voice. “No, Hunter, she’s not.” Mark answered. “But she pretty much just saved my life and my tongue right their.”
A whole commotion started about whether or not Adalynn was Mark’s girlfriend or not. Soon, Adalynn just couldn’t take it any longer. She stepped in between Mark and Hunter and shouted, “Stop it! Listen!” Luckily, she was loud enough to be heard. All heads turned toward her.
“Hey, Hunter! How many friends do you have?” Adalynn began.
“All of the people behind me, of course! Right, guys?” Hunter answered. None of the iguanas nodded or answered with a nod of the head.
Adalynn continued, “Exactly. Do you know why you don’t have any friends? Of course you don’t know. Well, I do. The reason you don’t have any is because nobody likes you. I’m sorry for being rude, but it’s true. No one likes you because you bully other iguanas. The only reason they were helping you was because they like to bully others, too. I bet they don’t have any friends, either, do you guys?” Silence. “Yup. Just what I thought. You like to bully, too, right? If you all don’t want to have friends, that’s fine with me. But I know from experience that having no friends doesn’t make you a very happy person. When Hassan became my friend, I felt like the luckiest girl in the world. I hope that soon, you guys will have the same feeling that I did.” She let these words sink in before saying, “So everybody who wants to have friends, step forward.”
As soon as she was done speaking, over half of the bullies stepped forward, including all of the girls. Then, one by one, the rest of them stepped forward. Only one stayed where he was; and that was Hunter.

While everyone was socializing, waiting for the bus, Adalynn walked over to Hunter and asked the iguana why he hadn’t stepped forward.
“Because…I just didn’t want to believe that someone had finally stood up to me.” he answered.
“Would you have stepped forward if you hadn’t?” Adalynn inquired.
Hunter nodded in response. “Then I guess you’re okay after all,” concluded Adalynn. I guess everyone learned something today, she thought as the bus pulled up to the side of the road.
